Ingredients

  • 8–9 ripe tomatoes

  • 3 tbsp cooking oil

  • 1 tsp finely chopped garlic

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • ¾ tsp sugar

  • 1 tsp oregano

  • 1 tsp red chilli flakes

  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup or sauce

Directions

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  • While the water heats, rinse the tomatoes and cut off the tops.
  • Make a shallow “X” cut on the bottom (opposite the stem) of each tomato. This helps loosen the skin while boiling.
  • Carefully place the tomatoes into the boiling water.
  • Let them cook for 8–10 minutes, or until the skin starts to peel away.
  • Remove the tomatoes and let them cool slightly.
  • Peel off the skin and discard.
  • Chop the peeled tomatoes into small chunks.
  • Add them to a blender or mixer and blend into a smooth purée.
  • Heat 3 tbsp of oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Add chopped garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 30 seconds).
  • Pour in the tomato purée and stir well.
  • Add salt, red chilli powder, sugar, oregano, and chilli flakes.
  • Mix in the tomato ketchup for added tang and depth of flavor.
  • Let the sauce simmer for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once cooked and slightly cooled, transfer the sauce to a clean, airtight container.
  • Refrigerate and use as needed for homemade pizzas or even pasta!

Notes

  • Always use ripe, red tomatoes for the best color and flavor.
  • Adding tomato ketchup enhances the taste and balances acidity.
  • Adjust spices to your taste—add basil or thyme for an Italian twist.
  • This sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days, or frozen for up to 1 month.
  • Use olive oil for a more authentic Mediterranean flavor, but any neutral oil works too.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Can I skip the boiling step and use raw tomatoes directly?
A:
Blanching helps remove the tomato skin easily and gives a smoother texture. Skipping it may result in a gritty sauce.

Q2: Can I use canned tomatoes instead of fresh?
A:
Yes! If you’re short on time, canned tomatoes (whole or crushed) work well. Use about 2 cups as a substitute.

Q3. Is this pizza sauce spicy?
A:
It has a mild kick from red chilli powder and flakes. You can adjust the spice level to suit your taste.

Q4. How long does homemade pizza sauce last in the fridge?
A: It stays fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for 6-7 days. For longer storage, freeze it in portions.

Q5. Can I use this sauce for pasta?
A: Absolutely! This tomato sauce is versatile and can be used as a pasta base, dipping sauce, or even a sandwich spread.
